What to Expect on Your First Visit to a Chiropractor

A chiropractor applies alternative treatment methods to diagnose disorders of the musculoskeletal system with a focus on the spine. This type of treatment includes the use of spinal manipulation therapy and the manipulation of tissues and joints. They do not use traditional medicine or surgery but believe in using skeletal imaging, neurological evaluation and orthopedics to assess patients.

Chiropractors utilize a form of spinal manipulation to readjust the affected areas. They use their hands to manipulate, mobilize and adjust the spine. During treatment, a three-joint complex motion is made that does not harm joints but improves the range of motion. These thrusts affect the neural discharge from spinal muscle tissues.

If you suffer from back pain or neck pain, visiting a therapist may help alleviate your symptoms. When you go to a chiropractic office, you can expect to have your medical history reviewed and an evaluation of your symptoms completed. Your visit will also include an exam and diagnosis. Here is a review of what you can expect on your first visit to a chiropractor.

An Assessment of Your Medical History

The first time you the therapist you will need to provide them with your medical history and your family’s as well. A member of the office will give you paperwork to complete and your background information. The paperwork includes questions about your symptoms such as how long you have had the pain and where it is located. The therapist will ask you to describe the pain as sharp, dull, throbbing or burning.

There may be diagrams for you to choose from that can help the therapist get a better idea of your condition. You can also bring any diagnostic images you have and medical records from your doctor to help with treatment. During the evaluation, you will be asked about any physical activities that you participate in and about what makes symptoms worsen. The therapist may also need to know about your occupational and psycho social history.

A Chiropractic Exam

The therapist will give you a thorough exam that consists of having your blood pressure checked, a pulse reading and reflex test. If necessary, you will be given neurological and orthopedic exams. The evaluation includes a range of motion test, muscle tone and muscle strength too. You may have to be given diagnostic studies such as X-ray exams, magnetic resonance imaging and laboratory tests.

Diagnosis

After all of your symptoms are evaluated, and diagnostic tests have been completed. The therapist will diagnose your condition and provide you with an individualized treatment plan. You are then given information about the type of therapy needed and the length of treatment. If you are diagnosed with lower back pain, the therapist may suggest spinal or manual manipulation. This type of treatment includes thrusts that are applied to the vertebra at a high velocity. The therapist will also evaluate the seriousness of your injury. They will find out if you have a tumor, infection, fracture or nerve problem.

There are also conditions of the lumbar spine that do not have a specific cause. If you have an acute condition, treatment can last for up to six weeks, a sub-acute injury may require treatment for up to 12 weeks. On the other hand, a chronic condition needs to be treated for more than 12 weeks. Even though you have treatment, your symptoms can reoccur and you may need to return to the therapist periodically.

When you have your first chiropractic adjustment, the therapist explains everything to you. They make sure you understand how the treatment works and the benefits of therapy.

Nine Tips for Seeking a Practitioner Who Offers Treatments for the Neck and Back

If you have back, neck or shoulder pain, then the best professional to visit is a chiropractic specialist. In addition to caring for the spine and nearby body regions, this type of medical practitioner can provide additional care, including helping you to improve your body’s posture or planning a nutritious diet. Here are nine tips for choosing a chiropractor for your medical care.

Tip 1: Get a Referral from Your Physician

Your primary physician is an excellent source of information for finding additional care for a whiplash injury or an arthritic back. Ask your physician for a referral and a prescription. With the right documentation, the cost of care for your back or other health problems is often covered by your insurance plan. Keep track of your documentation so that you can request reimbursement for the specialized treatments.

Tip 2: Check the Medical Specialists Credentials

The state that you live in will have a medical licensing board that has an online site. You can check it to confirm that your chiropractor is licensed and has no complaints against her for any services. If you can’t find the experts name at the online site, then call the credentialing board to learn more about the individual.

Tip 3: Call Your Insurance Company

Contact your medical insurance company to determine if it has a list of approved health care providers. The individuals who are listed on your medical insurance’s website are more likely to accept your insurance card so that all or part of the service is covered.

Tip 4: Does the Chiropractic Expert Have a Specialty?

Some health care experts specialize in treating certain conditions, so you should understand your medical problem so that you can seek assistance from the right person. Check the medical expert’s website for information on his specialty areas or make a telephone call to the office to talk to the expert.

Tip 5: Check the Practitioner’s Education

Each state has different educational requirements for working as a chiropractor, so you should learn more about where the individual went to school and how long he attended the institution. You can also contact the university to determine if it has a credentialed training program.

Tip 6: Participating in Professional Associations

The health care specialist who you choose should belong to professional associations for the industry. These associations are often listed on the practitioner’s website, and you can look at the association’s websites to learn more about your practitioner’s education and practical training.

Tip 7: Talk to Your Friends

You probably have one or more friends who have visited a chiropractic health care office, and they can provide a recommendation for someone. The information provided by the individuals who you know will make you feel more comfortable about receiving specialized treatment for a back or neck injury.

Tip 8: A Nearby Health Care Office

If you are in pain and recovering from neck or back pain, then you won’t want to ride a subway for several hours or drive your vehicle for hundreds of miles to receive treatment. Look for a medical facility that is located nearby for your medical treatment so that you will feel comfortable visiting the location whenever it is required.

Tip 9: Good Communication Skills

Whenever you are seeking medical care for a chronic condition, you will want to visit a practitioner who has excellent communication skills. This is the individual who will provide hands-on treatment, and she will also give you advice about continuing physical therapy at home.

Is Seeing a Chiropractor Safe?

Neuromusculoskeletal pain makes it difficult to live a fulfilling lifestyle. When you are not able to function in your full range of motion or participate in athletic activities, life can be overbearing. Luckily, chiropractic care is available as a safe and effective solution. This form of care is focused on manipulation of the spine and other neuromusculoskeletal therapy techniques. People often opt for a chiropractor to alleviate arthritis, headaches, back pain, accident injuries, sports injuries, bad posture, and weightlifting injuries. Nevertheless, chiropractic care has universal appeal because everyone can benefit from improved posture or regular check-ups.

When it comes to back pain, the numbers are split on whether a patient chooses a chiropractor or a physical therapist to improve their condition. For this reason, you can think of chiropractic as a specialized type of physical therapy. Chiropractic doctors use an exclusive method called “spinal adjustment” to correct subluxations and other joint mobility issues. Because they do not use any invasive procedures or surgeries to correct spinal alignment and joint problems, there is no dark side.

However, if you are particularly sensitive, there are even doctors who use gentle hand manipulations rather than drop tables. The types of subluxations that chiropractors treat are not the type that are recognized by other medical sciences. Instead, these subluxations are more metaphysical and part of a belief that muscle memory must be retrained in misaligned vertebrae.

When your body is injured, the natural reaction is to limit the range of motion because there is pain and inflammation that punishes you whenever you overwork injured muscles. This inflammation is useful to force injured people to stay off that bad foot or to refrain from lifting heavy objects while they heal. However, this mechanism can malfunction if the injury produces chronic inflammation, or you fail to address it with proper physical therapy. The end result is a vicious cycle where the pinched nerves and pain are exacerbated by tense muscle reactions that seize up the body.

Chiropractors Worldwide

The World Health Organization (WHO), nonetheless, cites some of the problems that can be experienced by careless doctors who do not consider the tolerances of their patients, or who use excessive manipulation, poor techniques, or other inadequate practices. Although extremely rare, it is possible to suffer the following injuries:

    • Exacerbation of neurological symptoms
    • Abdominal aortic aneurysm ruptures
    • Herniated lumbar disc
    • Cauda equina syndrome
    • Horner’s syndrome
    • Pathological fractures
    • Vertebrobasilar accidents
    • Myelopathy
    • Cervical disc lesions
    • Diaphragmatic paralysis
    • And others …

These results are extremely rare and should not be cause for concern. Unless you are extremely frail or in very bad health, the chances are infinitesimal of suffering an injury at the hands of a well-trained doctor who graduated from an American university. In any case, always be sure to ask your doctor about using gentle hand manipulation therapies that progressively test your tolerances to prevent injuries.

Building a strong relationship with your doctor and providing feedback on your condition will reduce the risks of injury even further. Your doctor should know how you feel before, during, and after the alignment or therapies provided. Having a check-up and adjustment can be a very relaxing and freeing feeling that patients simply have to experience, in the very least, for its effects on their sense of well-being and comfort.

Most insurance plans in the US cover this type of medical care. This makes it easy for anyone to regularly obtain check-ups, adjustments, and posture-correcting instructions to improve their quality of life. A massage or physical therapy treatment does not provide the unique feeling of freedom and mobility that only is possible with quality chiropractic care.
