East Layton, Utah
Layton became a small rural community as an outgrowth of Kaysville, Utah in the 1850s. It grew slowly but steadily and as population increased so did the demand for a dependable water supply. East Layton was located in the high desert and obtaining dependable water was always an issue. Town leaders wanted water readily available throughout the area but needed funds to make that a reality. Layton incorporated in the 1930s in order to qualify for federal money from the Works Progress Administration (WPA.) The funds for water improvements were granted but terrain was rugged which made progress slow. Water eventually came to Layton with support from the state of Utah as well as funds from residents.
Population steadily increased in East Layton and the town became a city in 1972 with a population just under 800 people. However, the town never gained a strong business base which affected the amount of taxes the community had available for improvements. Residents shopped in nearby communities which also affected city monies.
In the late 1970s East Layton’s population grew rapidly as residents of the newly built Hill Air Force Base settled in. Municipal services needed to expand with the rapid population growth but tax money wasn’t there for improvements. City leaders, with voter approval, decided to merge with nearby Layton and in January of 1981 East Layton became a part of Layton, Ut. Layton is the largest city in Utah’s Davis County and one of Utah’s largest cities.
Today Layton is a quiet residential suburb with a nice residential base, several restaurants, a nice school, and a spattering of other businesses.
